Tailor Resume to the job you want – and get it!

Tailor Resume to the job you want – and get it!

Your Resume is probably the most important part of your application to get the job of your dreams. The cover letter will be the place where you convince the recruiter/headhunter/company to read on, and read your entire Resume.

A very good idea will be to tailor every job application with a tailor Resume, if you want the job of your dreams, the employer should also read a “dream of a Resume”.

The basic principle of your Resume is to tailor it to the job:

  • Be sure to cover the most important job skills, qualifications, and experience in your Resume.
  • Be certain that most parts of your Resume relates to the job you apply for.
  • Use the same skills, experience, and qualifications description as in the job ad.
  • Ensure that your previous experience is clearly and relevant to the job application.

This is a lot easier to do when using Comoto, you can have several Resumes in the system and specialize them to the current application.

You have the basic material available from your basic Resume (maybe your LinkedIn profile), and then you should just adapt that material to the wishes to you dream job.

An Outline of the basics in a Resume is seen below:

Professional Summary

The prof. summary is the part where you describe your overall motivation. Here you should describe that the current job would fit into your career choice. This is should show the employer that this job is the next step on your career ladder.

Skills

Skills are mostly seen as keywords in a job add; they are essential criteria that you have to have to fill this position. It is not a question if you have them all, most people don’t or just barely, but you must include all the required skills as much as possible. Highlight the skills where your expertise really supersedes the demands highlighted and mention the rest.

Work Experience

Your former work experience needs particular care and you should try to reuse some of the skills or goals explained in the job ad. Explain you experience very concise and clear, write the roles and tasks you had. Be sure to use the same wordings as in the requirements for this job.

Use several examples, and where it is possible show how your skills where developed and refined through your previous work experience. Make it extremely clear that you have gained extra expertise through your previous experience.

Achieved goals

Goals that you have achieved on top of your work experience for each job description are extremely positive, it shows that you aim for the goals the employer puts up and that you are dedicated to the relevant tasks. Try to use examples that are related to the new job application if possible.

Educations / Qualifications

A lot of job ads describe a certain set of required qualifications. You should try to provide qualifications that meet these requirements. Sometimes you have similar qualifications, try to convince them that they are good enough. Either do it by email beforehand so that you are sure that your qualifications are good enough. This also gives you the opportunity to have a talk with the employer before you send your Resume.

Your qualifications need to be direct and to the point, and if the employer describes them very details, you do the same. Make it look like you’re obviously qualified and the best choice for the job.

As described above it is not that hard to make your Resume targeted to the job your applying for. Using Comoto to do this is very easily, you have the opportunity to have several distinct Resume’s and you can change them and have as many as you like in your portfolio. You can even make them online versions, so that you can refer to a link if you talk with an interesting person.

Multiple Resumes is a unique feature – that can change how you manage your Resume

Multiple CVs is a unique feature – that can change how you manage CVs

The unique Comoto feature to handle multiple CVs is an integrated part of the Comoto CV Manager.

This new feature is very dynamic and only the sky is the limit on what you can use it for:

  • Multiple CVs to describe the different competences you have
  • Multiple CVs – one for each and different type of jobs with special focus on requirement in each job
  • Multiple and different language versions

You are more than welcome to try it out here

How to handle your Resume privacy and avoid Resume risks like Identity theft and Resume misuse

How to handle your Resume privacy and avoid Resume risks like Identity theft and Resume misuse

To ensure you have full control over your Resumes privacy risk likeidentity theft

  • Identity theft based on your Resume information
  • Misuse of your Resume information
  • To detailed Resume information
  • Information risk – To updated Resume information

And consider the information you include in your Resume (that’s another reason for have more than one Resume – see here). Should you include ?

  • Name
  • Full Address
  • Email
  • Twitter, Facebook and other social network information
  • Phone number (land line or mobile)
  • Social security number or central register personal number or similar
  • Tax payer number
  • Password number
  • Picture
  • Mothers Maiden name
  • Drivers’ license number and information
  • Bank account number or the information that you have one

What about:

  • Marital status.
  • Height
  • Weight
  • Religion
  • Professional license number.
  • Gender
  • Age
  • The reason why you left a past employer.

You should also consider whom you are sending an application and a Resume or when you fill out their web based application form with your Resume data

  • Who is the recruiter or the company – a real or a fake job
  • Who is the company having the job – a scam ?
  • How are they handling my Resume data
  • What can the use my Resume data for
  • How long time can the keep my data
  • How can I ensure they have updated data over time / always ?

You should also consider the Resume databases you are sending the Resume or when you fill out their form with your Resume data

  • Who is the Resume Database– a real or a fake job
  • Who is the company behind – a scam
  • How are they handling my data
  • What can the use my Resume data for
  • How long time can the keep my data
  • How can I ensure they have updated data over time

When you get a job offer you should still be cautions – first consider if it is a real or fake offer – but also accept to show (avoid copies) more detailed information like:

  • Passport
  • Birth certificate

as the company need to ensure you are who you say you are and the company also need to get you registered correctly in the company record.

Always remember – Sounds too good to be true? It probably is. Be careful!

Privacy – ”You have no privacy. Get over it” – or handle it!

CEO comments – Privacy – ”You have no privacy. Get over it” – accept it or try to handle it – if that is possible at all!

The above quote from the CEO of Sun in 1999 seems to be more evident than ever – after a week where it was illustrated that Apple is tracking our phone calls and our geolocation – just one week after Facebook was advised to “better protect its users and improve overall security” by Sophos is seems more then relevant to touch this important subject, once again.

In several blog posts I will focus on and describe several privacy issues and especially their effect on your Resumes and job process related risk and behavior – it is as very difficult balance between giving and controlling information, being open or being closed in behavior!

Some of the subjects I will comment is:

  • Public / available information
  • How to find the right balance between being found by headhunters on social networks and not show to much information making it possible to misuse the information.
  • Cyberstalking
Is an increasing problem and often it is easy to find the necessary information in your CV / Resume to either harass you or stalk you.
  • Your web history is being tracked with cookies and other smart tools
Who to seem what and when – what if shared
  • Search engine results What can We find out about you if we search you on Google and others – if the information is not the same as in your CV – what is the correct information and how can you – or can’t – change the search impression
  • Social networks
We all love social networks – the LinkedIn of this world  – but what happens if your network is with the wrong guys ?
  • Fake job offers Increasing in numbers trying either to get you to do something you should have avoided or just to get information from you – see my CEO comments here on this matter LINK
  • CV Database scams
Inventing traffic on the CV Database site or fake interest in you – can make you make the wrong decisions – see my CEO comments here on this subject LINK
  • Spam An old friend – still there and stronger than ever!
  • Bacn
The new recipe – mails from a provider where you accepted – or did not remove the check-mark within the 44 pages standard terms – is increasing and drowning you in mails missing the important one

Please let me know  if I should take similar matters into consideration – feel free to mail us at theteam@140.82.38.88

Promote your Google+ profile as an entrypoint to your Resume

Promote your Google+ profile as an entrypoint to your Resume

Promote your Google plusWith just a few simple added texts in your profile, you can promote your Google+ profile to the top of the search pages. This will have a great impact when a headhunter/recruiter searches for you in Google or other search engines, thus maintaining your online portfolio perfectly and being in complete control. As a followup article on our previous successful article about using your Google+ profile as a “Interactive CV or Resume” this article is all about maintaining and using your Google+ profile as an entry-point for your Resume. With only 3 things to change or add to your profile, it will come closer to the top of the search queries:

  1. Google+ profile / About section
  2. Links section
  3. Search visibility

Google+ profile / About section

In this section you should add your typical data from your Resume, this includes a short introduction to sum up you as a person.

Introduction

Here you can write a small introduction to you as a person, you could take this from your professional summary in you Comoto profile.

Bragging rights

Here you write about your skills. This section is only meant to be a list of items separated with a comma mainly because in this area you have no ways to edit the layout of the text. This is making this place perfect to “Brag” with you skills and accomplishments in a list form.

Occupation

Please enter your current occupation as “Title” at which “Company”

Employment / Education

Under employment you enter your previous employment with Company name and Title and the period you worked there, please make sure this is aligned to your Resume information. Under education you enter your education in the same way as employment with School name, Major or Field of study and start/end date. Please enter them in the right order as there are for now no capability to change the order of these entries. (We have communicated with Google to either sort them either descending (Year) or to add the feature to manually sort the entries.

Links

Under links you should add links to the places where you have valid information regarding you as a person. For instance you could have a link to your Comoto Profile, your Personal Blog or Web-page, pages where you have written articles. Whether you use Linkedin, Xing, Viadeo or another social networking application for your professional network you should also add a link to that page. If you fancy you can also add a link to your Facebook profile. One thing you should be certain off is to have the information aligned on these different links, that is don’t have information else where which are not the same as the inform you have on your Google Profile.

Search Visibility

To have the information that you have entered made available to search engines for them to index the information and make it available in search queries, the only thing you need to remember is to check of the Search visibility option in your Google+ profile. You can find it under your Google+ profile under the About section and then at the bottom of that page.

Conclusion

With this you will be able to manage the information made available about you on the Internet. A Google+ profile is ranked pretty high in Google’s search engine when searching for persons. If you have the information listed in this article about the School’s you attended (with your degrees), places you have worked (Company and Title), Skills and Achievements (under bragging rights), Links (to more information about you) and a small introduction to you as a person under Introduction, it will be must easier for potential headhunters/recruiters to find the right information about you and you’re in control of this information. See it as an insurance to be in control of not only your CV but also being on control of other information regarding you as a person. Best of all the Google+ profile is highly ranked in Searches done with Google and other search engines.

Comoto Resume Funny Friday: Honesty is a virtue but this Resume is…

Honesty is the virtue of refusing to fake the facts of reality – Comoto Resume Funny Friday

In some of our Comoto Resume Funny posts, we state the importance of not lying and being honest all the way through the recruitment process. We still think this, and we have seen a lot of Resumes or Resumes and but the ad below is taking the first-prize in honesty. But again how would you explain a 10 year gap in your Resume, that would be a bit hard to explain and still being honest.

It is admirable the honesty and the straight forward way to explain this, and we really hope that the person behind this ad, has found a position so that he/she can take care of his family and get a good life.

Resume databases system irritates me – also you?

Resume database systems irritate me – also you?

resume databases

I have to say I am sorry for the person, who actively wants to search for a job – it is an extremely tedious process!

Comoto will offer solutions to reduce this tediousness – making it faster and easier for you to send in the information – but unfortunately we can’t do anything with all the unnecessary questions and requests for information you are being asked to answer or deliver.

As an example – In our region of the world we have a very popular Resume database / Job Application system that asks if you have a particular youngster driver license for a moped (required for those between 16 and 18). This question is asked independent of your age or other driver’s licenses. Why not start with the most common option and ONLY if it makes sense then ask the additional questions.

It would also be simple to add some links between your job interests or actual job position – and add some intelligent links between your age and educational level to ensure you get asked the right question and thus having a smooth experience using these Resume database / Job Application systems.

But this seems not to be the case – therefore we need to add these data request to Comoto for you to be able to feed / forward / link the data to your favorite Resume databases. This example is just one illustration of the lack of intelligence in the systems but sometimes also the people behind these systems could also be better in their planning and prioritization of data request instead of having a system that must fit everybody – i.e. questions asked for particular industries needs to be answered by all users (or actually not answered).

I look forward to present in details some of our forthcoming solutions in making Comoto the central place for your Resume management – as we wants Comoto to be the best Resume Builder / Creator and Resume Manager for you.

How to find time to create Resumes and search job? Optimise your job search process.

find time CVHow to find time to handle your job search process to get that perfect new job

Finding time when in job (if not also see here) to search for and get your next job can actually be rather difficult – because when you have decided that it is time to make a change in your job or have decided to test if you can make the next step in your career it is important to plan and consider the rationale behind you decision – things that unfortunately takes time – therefore choose a tool that strengthen your process.

At comoto.com we try not only to make it as easy and fast as possible for you to create a CV but also to be on top of your job searching process. We also believe a successful job searching process should be a positive experience and reduce the time you waste on tedious actions and repetitions again and again.

Usually starting the job searching process would be updating your CV at some of the CV databases you know. I suggest a different approach – take control and learn and improve and make it into a process instead of a onetime action – but that is not supported by any CV database I know of.

  • Start the planning by preparing all your documents and consider the references needed
  • Create a CV on comoto.com (you can make a quick start by importing your linkedin profile)
  • Find some relevant jobs (could even be some old job offers) – consider which skillset that would be important and think how it would be matched by your experience.
  • Consider the rationale behind you job change wish – how can you illustrate that in your CV – skillset and/or experiences
  • Reevaluate the CV and add or change the wording if needed by pushing the Edit button to build you Base CV
  • Build some additional CV’s changing the wording for you to consider the best version
  • Create some different version of your CV by choosing some of our templates and ask some people knowing you well to comments (a new feature will be added soon to help you here at comoto.com)

Based on the comments received you are ready to target your CV for each job you wants to apply – and hopefully understand this is an ongoing process with changes each time – and comoto.com supports this and ensure you stay on top.

Are we the only one recommending multiple and targeted CV’s – no – not at all!

For example in Financial Times you can read the following quote from CEO Maggie Berry from http://www.womenintechnology.co.uk “You need to tailor each CV to the job you’re applying for. I would work my way through the job specification and make sure that each one is reflected in the CV.”

“Most candidates have just the one CV that they fire off to every employer.”

“But please don’t do that. I know some applicants say they tailor their application in the covering letter – but that might not reach the manager.“

Tailored (targeted) Resumes – use a job targeted Resume to increase the likelihood of getting the job

targeted resumesDo you use the same Resume for every application you make – you shold not !

You want to have specialised or as we call it targeted Resume for each job you apply for and with our multiple Resumes feature you are able to do that fast and easy.

We have implemented a feature called multiple Resumes.
With this feature you can have as many CV’s as you want and notice you can choose to make them inherit or not inherit from each other (we also call this a clone). When inherited – if you change the “top” CV of a group of inherited CV they all change – smart ! (example – at the drawing above – if the you in the Michael Comoto (Renewables) CV change a date  both the German and the Danish version same date is also changed).

If you want to have another CV version that are not inherited/linked to other CV’s then make a non inherit version (we also call this a copy). It could also be a CV in another language – even smarter!

For each CV you can choose Template (and preview before you choose).

Hereby you only need change what is necessary to have tailormade CV’s for the job application you need just right now – and we have saved you a lot of time and efforts !

Notice your CV versions are all saved in your portfolio of CV’s and you can use them as you like.

Resume Tips – Resume Layout and Design of Resume is important

Resume Layout and Design of Resume is important

Maintain different version of your Resume and different Resume Layout, a short one as an appetizer, a general one to include most of your skills and experience and a long one which includes everything you have made.

These different versions should look alike with different Resume Layout so that you can start out with the short version and send a more detailed version if you are asked to do so. It is also useful to have online versions of your Resume. Using Comoto you have that automatically, you can even put a password on them so that only people you want to see them will be able to see them.

There is not only on advice here when talking about layout and design. For instance, within the financial sector a layout with funny graphical details in it will be a show stopper in many cases, they would in many cases see that as unprofessional. On the other hand if you are working within Marketing/Branding a basic textual Resume would be seen and boring. So it is important for you to make the design layout reflect you as a person and the area you are working in.

With Comoto you can do this automatically, you have all you detailed information in the database and you can have different layout for different positions or companies. Just by the press of a button you have a new design.

The Comoto Team

Comoto‘s aim is to become “The Central Place” where you can create, clone, copy, manage, backup and distribute your Resume and Cover letters fast and easy. To create your first Comoto Resume, signup for free and just add your data (or use one of the many easy import features), pick one of our special designed templates, preview your Resume and finally export to your favorite format (.DOC – .PDF – .PNG) or publish it in a Web Profile (Public/Private). Now you are ready to have full control of your Resume. Notice other unique features – like multiple resumes – a few clicks and you can create a Resume targeted for a specific job or Export to many different formats.

Resume Inconsistencies between Google and your Resume!

Be aware of Resume inconsistencies between Google and your Resume!

Resume InconsistenciesWell, is it a lie or is it a mistake when your Resume is not consistent with easy search able information? The judge of that I think will be the recruiter not you!

Have you ever considered checking your Resume data and other information – which can be found within seconds on the Internet – and compare that to your Resume data. It can be titles, responsibilities, task carried out or exams that you state but a search engine source shows differently hereby pinpointing a potential conflict or breach in
data consistence.

At some time during a hiring process either the recruiter or your potential new colleagues might do some checking or preparing before meeting you, and your Resume can be completely correct as the search information might be outdated but when it happens the doubt have been raised and they might as a consequence prefer another candidate.

The best idea would be to do the same tests yourself – and remember not only on Google, also test some of the other search engines as well as industry specific pages and other relevant sources.

Remember to search as if you were a headhunter – it might be that the job and title you claim you have is also shown by somebody else – and make other similar logical tests.

If you find some information you would like to have corrected or deleted which I doubt you can – but it might be worth a try – then the second best thing you can do is to be prepared and have a good and reliable explanation to the inconsistency in the information.

Here we will try to put them together in some phrases for your use. As always it is good to use these words, but don’t overdo it, use them with caution and don’t use the same for all your achievements.

Comoto funny friday: “Twatif” we were restricted to 140 characters…. CV Twitter

“Twatif” we were restricted to 140 characters…. CV Twitter

CV Twitter: What if you were restricted by 140 character sentences in real life, then you would  constantly being forced to stop in the middle of a word or sentence before being able to complete what you were trying to say.

The  people at FromBogotaWithLove have made a hilarious video to demonstrate the consequences. It is just super, well for the faint hearted it should be mentioned that there is some explicit language being used in this video.

The relationship between Comoto and LinkedIn

The relationship between Comoto and Linkedin

How can I talk about the relationship to a relationship database like LinkedIn or Xing or Viadeo. At Comoto we are strong believers in relationship databases for their unique purpose and big fans of LinkedIn – their services help you to build relationships and keep in contact with important people in your business.

And yes they are also perfect to build relationships with or to be seen by headhunters – remember a relationship database work perfect as a place where you can illustrate your experiences without having the problems of your current employer being annoyed for being public, as if everybody could find you in a Resume database (we will revert with more about this another day).

Ensure there is a match between your profile and your Resume – Comoto ensures this because we can create your Resume from your LinkedIn profile

We have been asked the same question many times – Is Comoto a LinkedIn hack – Comoto is not a hack, tweak or similar neither are we hacking or tweaking LinkedIn information. The Comoto technology build your curriculum vitae based on our use of the LinkedIn API. Another popular question is export to LinkedIn – unfortunately we cannot (yet) export to LinkedIn (remember to copy or paste data from Comoto is easy). By the way – we would like to launch similar features for other relationship databases like Xing and Viadeo but they dont have an API yet.

Ensure you are evaluated on your full Resume and not just your relationship profile

How many times have you been contacted by headhunters or others because they have seen what you have done in the past as described in your profile – when you should be evaluated on what you are doing now or maybe even what you want to do in the future !

That is why you need a full Resume to show and present your current and future potential – in full !

Actually you don’t need a full Resume- you need several full Resumes – pinpointed for specific job or roles – and maintain your full control over you Resume versions to ensure your privacy.

Use Comoto’s unique multiple Resume feature for that – create a Resume specific for a job or a type of jobs – or different language versions – or have a short, basic, long version of your Resume.

You fight to protect your data and take care of privacy – but your password stinks!

How many passwords do you have ? Take care of privacy!

take care of privaciesIt seems that the world can be divided into two – those of us who have 1 password for everything and those of us who have 3 passwords. The later – which actually used to include me – have a short one for fast access, a in-between and thus more protective password for those more private logins and a third and complicated password for the bank accounts and other important stuff !Remember to take care of privacy.

How can I make that postulate – unfortunately some at the large hacks of password at Sony and Gawker showed that a lot of the people using both systems used the same password – and please notice that the passwords on these systems were not encrypted – anybody working at these sites or at similar sites could actually see the password. It should be an unspoken requirement that passwords are encrypted (at Comoto your password is encrypted and we cannot see it – we take care of your privacy).

How strong is your password ?

take care of privaciesA strong password would for instance be 2hCP7quTEufK – where qwerty12345 is not. Making passwords like that is not always easy and I have personally started to use Roboform to generate and remember my passwords (I choose Roboform password software because it works in my IE Explorer and Firefox and both on Mac and Windows as well as my phone and my tablet). If you don’t like or dont trust password software then start using some logical combining and higher numbers of characters – for example combing a complicated password 2hCP7qu**** by changing the last 4 characters with something related to the site or use – 2hCP7qu**** becomes 2hCP7qucomo at Comoto. You can test the strenght of your password here. You might wonder – why a password is important on a Resume builder and Resume databases – first and foremost because it is your data and privacy – but have you ever considered what could happens if somebody you didn’t know, started using your data and Resume just to harm you  – applying for a job in general, mailed an application to your current employer’s worst competitor or…. I will leave it up to you to think about other nasty examples – or use the time instead to make sure you have a proper password strategy.

I have just found the perfect job!!

I have just found the perfect job

– and spent time on an application – but the dream job was a fake just to attract attention to a Resume or Job database!

perfect jobIn the last couple of weeks I have illustrated some of the dirty tricks and issues with Resumes and the job process and I have with examples illustrated that candidates, companies and also the Resume database providers can have doubtful behaviors !

This week I will continue to illustrate misconduct from Resume database owners – the subject for this week is an example from our home country as a large recruiting company here had guidelines that each of their departments should have at least 25 job offers – and if they did not have enough actual jobs they should simply invent some fake jobs!

Regrettably – this example is not the only example but seldom have the misconduct been as clear a part of the corporate guidelines – it seems to be an often used practice for some headhunters, CV database providers and even companies  to show they are successfull.

To avoid any doubt this is illegal in Denmark and will be prosecuted should anyone get any smart ideas!

How can you avoid being misused by a fake job provider – sorry to say but you can’t – but if you believe it might be the case for an interesting job wait a few days before applying or call the provider to check – and hereby you also might get additional information – as the provider often will not spend time explaining anything to you if the job is a fake.

Remember, if you as a candidate applied for a fake job you will often be told – sorry but you are not relevant for that job – but remember to add your Resume to our database – and apply again as your background is relevant for these types of jobs. Hereby you are not only wasting time but also get the wrong advice, you might also believe you wrongly have had a chance for getting a particular job or that particular type of job is available . Unfortunately if neither of these facts are correct as you might be taking erroneous decisions for your  future career!

I really hope you will not encounter a “fake job” and if you do, that you will discover in time and save the extra work that it brings with no result at all.
