Target CV to the job you want – and get it! (UK tekst)

Target CV to the job you want – and get it!

Your CV is probably the most important part of your application to get the job of your dreams. The cover letter will be the place where you convince the recruiter/headhunter/company to read on, and read your entire CV.

A very good idea will be to target every job application with a tailor-made target CV, if you want the job of your dreams, the employer should also read a “dream of a CV”.

The basic principle of your CV is to target it to the job:

  • Be sure to cover the most important job skills, qualifications, and experience in your CV.
  • Be certain that most parts of your CV relates to the job you apply for.
  • Use the same skills, experience, and qualifications description as in the job ad.
  • Ensure that your previous experience is clearly and relevant to the job application.

This is a lot easier to do when using Comoto, you can have several CV in the system and specialize them to the current application.

You have the basic material available from your basic CV (maybe your LinkedIn profile), and then you should just adapt that material to the wishes to you dream job.

An Outline of the basics in a CV is seen below:

Professional Summary

The prof. summary is the part where you describe your overall motivation. Here you should describe that the current job would fit into your career choice. This is should show the employer that this job is the next step on your career ladder.

Skills

Skills are mostly seen as keywords in a job add; they are essential criteria’s that you have to have to fill this position. It is not a question if you have them all, most people don’t or just barely, but you must include all the required skills as much as possible. Highlight the skills where your expertise really supersedes the demands highlighted and mention the rest.

Work Experience

Your former work experience needs particular care and you should try to reuse some of the skills or goals explained in the job ad. Explain you experience very concise and clear, write the roles and tasks you had. Be sure to use the same wordings as in the requirements for this job.

Use several examples, and where it is possible show how your skills where developed and refined through your previous work experience. Make it extremely clear that you have gained extra expertise through your previous experience.

Achieved goals

Goals that you have achieved on top of your work experience for each job description are extremely positive, it shows that you aim for the goals the employer puts up and that you are dedicated to the relevant tasks. Try to use examples that are related to the new job application if possible.

Educations / Qualifications

A lot of job ads describe a certain set of required qualifications. You should try to provide qualifications that meet these requirements. Sometimes you have similar qualifications, try to convince them that they are good enough. Either do it by email beforehand so that you are sure that your qualifications are good enough. This also gives you the opportunity to have a talk with the employer before you send your CV.

Your qualifications need to be direct and to the point, and if the employer describes them very details, you do the same. Make it look like you’re obviously qualified and the best choice for the job.

As described above it is not that hard to make your CV targeted to the job your applying for. Using Comoto to do this is very easily, you have the opportunity to have several distinct CV’s and you can change them and have as many as you like in your portfolio. You can even make them online versions, so that you can refer to a link if you talk with an interesting person.

Comoto uses the CEFR standard for language proficiency (UK tekst)

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages – language proficiency

In 1991 the Swiss Federal Authorities held an Intergovernmental Symposium in Rüschlikon, Switzerland, on “Transparency and Coherence in Language Learning in Europe: Objectives, Evaluation, Certification”. This symposium found that a Common European Framework for languages was needed to improve the recognition of language qualifications and language proficiency to help teachers co-operate, eventually leading to improved communication and cooperation generally in Europe.

Development of language proficiency

As a result of the symposium, the Swiss National Science Foundation set up a project to develop levels of proficiency, to lead on to the creation of a “European Language Portfolio” – certification in language ability which can be used across Europe.

Levels

The Common European Framework divides learners into three broad divisions which can be divided into six levels:

A Basic Speaker

A1 Breakthrough or beginner

A2 Waystage or elementary

B Independent Speaker

B1 Threshold or pre-intermediate
B2 Vantage or intermediate

C Proficient Speaker

C1 Effective Operational Proficiency or upper intermediate
C2 Mastery or advanced

The CEFR describes what a learner is supposed to be able to do in reading, listening, speaking and writing at each level.

Level Description
A1 Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
A2 Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
B1 Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
B2 Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
C1 Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning. Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
C2 Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.

Do you need a fast CV or the right CV? (UK tekst)

Do you need a fast CV or the right CV?

Need a fast CV now or a well considered and specific targeted for that one particular job you want! – by the way this is what we call a Comoto CV clone.

Seeking a new job is not just about sending the usual and standard CV you made ages ago – most of the time it requires an evaluation and maybe a Curriculum Vitae created/build especially for that particular job opening.

Sometimes you just need a fast CV, here and now because you have been contacted by a recruiter or found a job opening through your network – with Comoto it is a matter of seconds to send one of your CV’s (and if you don’t have one yet you can import it from LinkedIn or Europass in less than 32 seconds our latest tests shows).

But as mentioned most of the time you have enough time to consider and prepare the optimal strategy for the application and accompanying CV – what is important for you in the job, why are you the perfect candidate, which are the skills needed, which are the skills to emphasise – are some of the questions to ask yourself. Use an existing Comoto CV to create a clone (our word for a copy as you copy sorry clone everything – not just the text but also the structure, etc.) change and add to ensure all the considerations you have made in advance are covered – save and test several templates – which designs fits you and the situations best (if none send us your ideas) – before you pick the optimal one.

7 +1 Reasons – could Google beat Facebook

Could Google beat Facebook: The newest social networking endeavor get people fascinated and make them switch from Facebook to Google+? YES we think it could be the case.

There are many good reasons to plan and make the switch when Google+ is publicly available, ranging from our own CV feature on Google+ over ease-of-use to respect for data privacy.

The discussion has often been when Google would start their own adventure within social networking; they have tried before with less than great success. But maybe these tries have not been wholeheartedly. Now it seems that with the new Google Plus they want go beyond Social Networking and actually offer the user something new and different.

I think Google+ should be seen as a new way of Google to tie together all their different services to one central hub – your Google+ profile. Google Plus should not only be seen as a stand-alone competitor to Facebook as it is more or less a complete repackaging of the Google Experience on the Internet. They have been pioneers before and might do it again.

If you only look on the basic Social Network features, Facebook have had a huge head start, and Facebook have a huge number of daily users that are used to use Facebook’s features. Google need to offer the Facebook users some serious new reasons to seriously consider dumping Facebook for Google+.

There will always be early adaptors, geeks and nerds, and Google also have their loyal following, sitting hours/days in a row to get the first glimpse of a new service or product from Google. After these people have tried it, it is up to the masses to decide whether Google+ will become the Social Network success that Google wants.

When looking at Google+ in its current version there are some things that meets the eye and that looks promising.

Below you can find a list of features which from our perspective could be that positive element that could be able to make people consider a switch – or using both…..

1. Integration with Google Services

The easiest thing for Google to do better than Facebook is of course the integration to all of Google’s other services.  That is, Google will probably build Google+ social networking features into if not all then all the service where Google+ makes sense. Google+ is already integrated into the navigation bar at the top right of almost all Google products, Gmail, Photos (Picasa), Reader, Web and others. This feature gives you the ability to monitor all Google+ events and at the same time easily to share content without ever leaving the Google service you might be using right now. A lot of internet users use Google’s other free services (Gmail, Maps, Search, Translate etc.), and after Google have integrated Google+ so closely to all their services it may feel a bit stupid to exit this universe to share something with online friends. If Google+ succeeds in taking the “special social experience” and make it part of the overall Google experience, they have a brilliant leverage to get people to use Google+.

2. Better Friend Management

Google are spot-on with the “Circles” concept, it is more in line with the normal way we build and handle friendships in real life. You probably have several different kinds of friends, and you probably also want to share specific things with somebody or groups in numerous different ways. Facebook has there “Groups” feature which lets you form groups of friends, but frankly compared to the easy way Google’s Circles the Facebook method is more tedious . Google has taken the pain out of your online friendship “management” with the introduction of circles.

3. Sparks – Find interesting stuff to share

The Sparks feature of Google+ is another important factor that Facebook does not have. Sparks is a way for Google to use their search engine to generate interesting stuff to share for users of Google+. Using the advantages of the Google search engine is an important factor to renew the content that is shared on Google+. On Facebook it often seems as the same information is send around again and again. And remember on Facebook you need to leave your present site to find interesting information to share, unless it is already shared by others and you just re-share the information.

4. Super Android Application, although not available on IPhone “yet”

With the launch of Google+ the Google+ Android application was also made available. It is a very nice piece of software and getting data from your mobile phone has suddenly become a lot easier. The app is already great, but my best guess is that the integration with Google and the Android version will be one of the major accomplishments of Google to make Google+ a success. People are online 24-7 and are always on reachable on their mobile phone, and they want to have their social network with them all the time. The Facebook’s solution is although nice looking but a bit troublesome to use from our experience.

5. Privacy and the right to your data.

Facebook has been pounded numerous times for their behavior in safeguarding your personal data. You are forced to publicize parts of your personal data to use Facebook and it is still hard to permanently delete your Facebook profile. This is done differently in Google+ as they have a different approach , you can take all the data you have in Google+ and walk away. This is easily done on a Google+ site called www.dataliberation.org.  With just a few clicks you can download data from your Picasa Web Albums, Google profile, Google+ stream, and other Google products and delete your profile. Also notice the Google Takeout feature on www.google.com/takeout.

6. Very strong Chat even with groups of people

Google has their Hangouts feature which is a very strong system for video chatting. Creating ad hoc group to make video chats can be done easily with this feature in Google+. The Android version calls them huddles and not hangouts, which makes it easy for Android users to start up a text chat with other Google+ users.

7. Content Sharing with focus on your privacy

It has been discussed many times but Privacy issues are here to stay, people advocating for stronger privacy on Social Networking sites wants us to able to have the user assigning the sharing level to each item they share. This has been heard by Google and they have built this capability into Google+. When you share an article or upload an image on Google+ you have to select which circles you want to share this with, this is somewhat different then the Facebook setup with preset lists of sharing practices.

8. (or +1) Our own Google+ “hack” using it as an interactive CV

It is easy and can be very useful to share your CV on Google+, even this feature has Google done better with the help of Comoto off course. You are able to control the images in the Photostrip and to create an interactive CV with no hassle at all. This is also possible in Facebook, but due to Facebook’s zooming algorithm it is not that good looking. Google centralizing function makes is easier to have a decent CV on your profile to be shared with other users of Google+. To see more about this feature please have a look at our post here.

Differences between CV templates, example, design and sample used in relation to a CV (UK tekst)

Differences between CV templates, example, design and sample used in relation to a CV (UK tekst)

CV template

CV templates

What are the differences within using the terms CV templates, Sample, Example and Design, when working with your CV – and what are actually your needs?

Have you ever considered what the differences are when using these terms, because these terms are used differently and might create a lot of confusion and misunderstanding. Have you decided how you will use them and how they fit into to your vocabulary?

To give you some inspiration we will try to describe how we see the differences between the terms in the following article.

Comoto has a clear distinction between the terms and their functionality.

CV Templates

A  template is a fixed format for your CV to present your data within a certain structure.

The advantage is that you don’t have to change any data to see or use another Template – just change the Template with a few clicks and see the effect.

Actually in Comoto the phrase “fixed format” would be wrong as we gives you the option to save Word format and change the final version as you like. This can be useful especially for page formatting and minor changes.

At Comoto we give you access to download our templates for free if you prefer to use them manually, but we strongly believe that you soon learn the advantage of using our builder instead – just a few clicks and you have created a new CV with your already existing CV data.

Example – the text

We use the term Example to describe a CV with texts describing actual jobs, experiences, objectives and professional summaries. Often without any thoughts of presentation. We have also examples here of text you should consider or not consider.

An example could also be an example on a specific job type for instance a salesperson example and how it is valid to write a CV for these types of jobs. We do not show live examples containing actual candidates data (but you can find them if they are made public by the owner).

Sample – the outcome

We use the term Sample to describe an illustration of how a CV could look like – i.e. how it would be presented to the receiver. This is typically with dummy content so no real content just the design and structure  showed to you with dummy content.

For example we have small sample pictures illustrating all our templates and designs, that would be called samples by us.

Design – the graphical parts

The Design of a CV is the term for the presentation format for your data. At Comoto we give you the option to either leave out or add graphics to pinpoint your strength, your belief or interest – or simply an option to make the CV more personal and compelling to look at.

The advantage of having your Data separated from the Template and Design is that you don’t have to change any data to see or use another template – just choose another template to see how it looks, and remember exporting your data to another template only takes a couple of seconds and can be done with “one” click by you mouse.

Hope this has given you and idea on how we see the differences between Templates, Samples, Designs and Examples.

How can I make the right decision in regards to my privacy! (UK tekst)

How can I make the right decision between having my full information made public, limited access or no access – some of the privacy factors to consider!

privacy

Finding the right balance between having detailed information public available on the net or not – taking the benefits and risks into consideration should involve several factors

  • The proper balance depends on your situation / wishes and will change over time and should be flexible and easy to change
Make it easy to change between being public and not – ensure you can change accessibility or can delete / pause your presence at every CV database or Profile network you use
  • The level of details should also be taken into consideration and be part of your planning
What is  the purpose – relationship building, personal branding, experience marketing or job searching.  There are different sites and or tools for each purpose – one size does fit it all!
  • The freshness and correctness in the information should be considered carefully – to make it manageable
Besides relevant for your purpose, remember the more detailed you get, the more difficult it is to update and to ensure consistency in the data – ignoring  this can have a substantial consequence as a serious reader would pick the next candidate,  if the information creates more confusion.
  • The general risk for any harassment’s from public information should be considered thoroughly
Need to show your full address ?
Need to show phone (all) numbers ?

Please do have in mind that if your CV information is public it will indexed by search engines and can also be found by any spammer. It would be rather simple not to show your email or obscure it by writing it as name[at]domain[dot]com or to show your name and email as a graphic file instead of text, these  just to mention a few easy steps. Same principles applies for text formats – does it need to be as an editable text– or could it for instance  be a non-editable PDF document?

I would also recommend some sort of read analysis – does anybody actually read the information – if not why not just close it down or change  – and remember to update or change the text on a regular basis as it would drive more attention towards that specific document.

When developing Comoto it was evident for us that we had to make it possible for you to have several CV’s and give you the control if they should be either public or password protected – thus  giving you not only full control of accessibility but also over the level of details  – and we also make it easy for you to ensure consistency in your data with our inheritance of data from one CV to another CV.

How to Use: Make a clone CV copy of your CV to test alternative wordings

How to Use: Make a clone CV copy of your CV to test alternative wording

CV copy

Comoto’s clone is a great feature to test alternative wordings before picking the optimal version of your CV and cover letter  – it is like having track changes on steroids.

Just like you can test different CV Template designs with a few clicks in Comoto you can also save any CV and then clone them (make a CV copy) to as many CV’s versions as you want. This is done for you to alter each of them individually to see which text and/or structure is the best wording for this specific CV.

Having different but still full versions to look at gives you a complete overview at all times and if you want to test a new version just clone it again and make the changes in the clone (this way you still have the old version to revert to). In this way you are ensuring you have the optimal tool for building the optimal CV for that particular job.

I hope that you will find this cloning/copying CV feature beneficial for you compared to using your word processor software – this is only one of the many features you have for free in Comoto. This features and other like our backup, privacy control features and other to are added to make you take full control of your CV building efforts.
